Some weddings are defined by a big moment. A surprise, a speech that stops the room, a downpour nobody saw coming. Josie and Nathan’s day wasn’t that kind of wedding, and honestly, that’s exactly what made it so lovely to photograph.

Set against the log buildings and open grounds of Fort William Historical Park — a backdrop that’s been part of Thunder Bay’s story for over 250 years — this was a day built on something simpler and harder to fake: two families who already loved each other completely, showing up fully for two people they clearly adored.

A Setting Like No Other

Fort William Historical Park isn’t your typical wedding venue, and that’s the point. Photos at the park are like no other. You can’t manufacture history!

For Josie and Nathan’s own portraits, we ventured out into the rest of Thunder Bay, starting with a Thunder Bay iconic backdrop of PACI at Waverley Park, before heading downtown into the Ruttan Building, where the marble and moody light gave the photos a completely different feel from the Park.

The Entrance No One Expected

If there’s one moment from the day that had the whole place laughing, it was the wedding party’s entrance into the reception. One groomsman and one bridesmaid had quietly swapped outfits beforehand, and she walked in wearing his suit like it was the most natural thing in the world. The room absolutely lost it.

It set the tone for the rest of the night: relaxed, warm, and unmistakably fun.

Surrounded by Love

What stayed with me most wasn’t a single frame, it was the constant, easy warmth running through the whole day. Parents who couldn’t stop smiling. Siblings who clearly adored being there. A couple who never once looked like they were performing for a camera, because they were too busy just being happy.

As I ended the evening I looked around a saw a room full of people who love each other to remind me of why I love this work.
